The landscape paintings of Karen Mathis portray the interplay of land and water, often featuring shoreline gardens and boat reflections. Living on one of the coves off the Tred Avon River on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, she has had a first hand opportunity to experience the ever-changing personalities of shoreline during all seasons of the year and times of the day. From the special quality of light at dawn and dusk to the exciting sparkle of water at midday-all appear in her paintings. In recent years she has spent most of her time painting out of doors on location in such varied settings as Connecticut, Texas, Vermont, and the southwest region of France, (summer, 2005.)

Karen has received awards in both watercolor and oil from such notable judges as the curator of The Phillips Gallery, Professor of the Corcoran School of Art, and the Chairman of the Art Department of George Washington University, all of Washington D.C.
